I did not get to know Sandy until my last few years at Schurz when I joined Tri Hi Y. However, I did get to know her older sister, Nancy, years later through my church in Elmhurst. It was through Nancy that I learned Sandy had passed away. When I told Nancy that we were getting ready for our 50th reunion from Schurz, she asked Sandy’s son, Robert, to write up something about his mother.

What follows is a brief synopsis of her life by Robert:

After graduating from high school, Sandy went to Purdue for four years (1967 we think). She then moved to California where her dear friend Diane Doe followed a few years later. Sandy lived to a small town of Turklock where she started teaching high school English and drama. There, she met her future husband, James Fletcher. The two married in 1969 and soon thereafter moved to Modesto, California. There, they raised their two children, Eric and Robert Fletcher, and resided until her unfortunate passing in December 2004.

Sandy's life was filled with a wondrous sense of adventure and commitment to education. She continued her education by obtaining a Master's Degree in Educational Studies. With her new degree, she transitioned to curriculum and administration. She ultimately became a Principal at Delta High School located just south of Sacramento, California. For six years, she balanced her life between her two loves, the school and her family. She eventually stepped down as Principal and became Vice-Principal of two high schools in Modesto.

I knew Sandra at Beaubien and served in Student Council with her at Schurz. She had a maturity and dignity about her beyond her years. I was pleased to learn that she did so well in her career in education, rising to become a high school principal. She passed away too soon.

I went to Beaubien and Schurz with Sandra. I remember her father having something to do with advertising Hams Beer. The family would go to the "Land of Sky Blue Waters" every summer to earn money to pay for an education at Perdue University. I think of her because she helped me learn about compassion as well as family values. I remember a curly haired kid named Jon Anderson too.

Sandy always seemed sincere and "solid" to me, really present when you talked to her.  I'm glad she used her skills in education and am grateful for the profile by her son.
